Participation / Isolation

2022
New York City

To participate is to be seen, to engage, to take up space. To isolate is to withdraw, to observe from a distance, to carve out solitude within the collective. Participation / Isolation navigates this duality, questioning the ways we interact with our surroundings and each other.

How does space shape the way we engage—or disengage? Can architecture foster connection while allowing for retreat? This project examines the boundaries between inclusion and exclusion, between gathering and solitude, revealing the subtle ways design influences our behavior.

By exploring urban environments, material interventions, and spatial experiments, Participation / Isolation sheds light on the fluid relationship between presence and absence. It is not about choosing one over the other, but about understanding how both states coexist in the fabric of the city.
