Vintage Mexican wood mold for cutlery

From the medieval period to the 19th century, sugar was transported and sold in the form of cones. It was not until around the 1820s that the term "granulated sugar" was first used, transforming the way buyers and cooks utilized sugar.

Wooden sugar molds were once common in early Mexican households. However, as the use of sugar cones has declined in modern times, these molds have also gradually disappeared. I discovered an alternative use for sugar molds at my Mexican friends' home—they repurpose them as utensil holders on the dining table. The warm texture of the wood interacts beautifully with the table, giving these traditional objects a new purpose and meaning.
